In its raw form, talc (magnesium silicate) is often contaminated with asbestos (a known carcinogen) and crystalline silica. In theory, it is purified before being used in cosmetics and contaminants are removed.
However, despite this, some of these dangerous particles remain and have the potential to enter and lodge themselves in the body and cause tumours, lesions and other damage.
Accidental inhalation of the powder can cause flu-like symptoms (cough, fever, runny nose), starting about four to six hours after inhalation. Hospitalisation may be required and babies have died from these effects.
